Bring the strut in your step and join us for a second line procession down City Hall Plaza as we usher in Black History Month with jubilant dancing and music by MJ’s Brass Boppers.

The New Orleans style brass band will lead a main line starting at the Goodlett Pl. side of the plaza and end at the Larkin St. entrance of the Main Library for a short performance. The “second line” refers to the spectators who join or follow the main line and contribute to the walking parade. This tradition has been a colorful and vivacious practice of celebration and mourning for hundreds of years among African American and Creole cultures.

MJ’s Brass Boppers, the swinging and singing brass-line, is the Bay Area’s only New Orleans-style brass band whose founding members were born and raised in New Orleans itself. Since 2008, this tight knit group of musicians have written, practiced and performed together at a host of festivals, community events, nightclubs and street corners around the Bay Area and beyond. They’ve opened for a variety of acts, including George Clinton & Funkadelic, The O’Jays, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave, Funky Meters, George Porter Jr., Kermit Ruffins, Glenn David Andrews, Zigaboo Modeliste, Monophonics, California Honeydrops, Dr. Michael White, Katdelic and many more.

“Attending a MJ’s Brass Boppers shows is the next best thing to following a brass band down New Orleans’ famed Claiborne Ave.” – Stern Grove (SF)
